How to Plan Your School Coronation Party

29/03/2023The King's Coronation

The coronation of King Charles III is just around the corner. On May 6th 2023, the whole country will unite in celebration of this historic occasion, the first coronation of a British monarch since 1953 when the late Queen Elizabeth II was crowned.

As communities all over Britain and the Commonwealth begin preparations for traditional street and garden parties for the big day itself, let's take a look at how you can have a right royal celebration specifically for the young people in our schools!

Running Imp has everything you need to make this special event even more memorable.

What activities can you include?

Back in 1953 when Queen Elizabeth was crowned, schools celebrated by conducting plays and pageants where children would craft their own costumes and crowns. They would also sing songs, play traditional playground games such as marbles and enjoy large picnics.

Your school coronation party can combine the ways this joyous event was celebrated in the past with some modern twists, to create a truly special event that not only upholds tradition but also celebrates modern day Britain.

Some fun activities to incorporate into your own event could include -

  • A royal costume theme - a royal costume theme not only serves to create excitement and represent the occasion, it will create opportunities for amazing photographs and even a ‘best dressed competition’.
  • Great British Bake Sale - celebrate all of Britain's most famous confectionary creations such as Victoria Sponge, Bakewell Tarts or Scones by having a bake sale with proceeds going to a cause of your choice.
  • Party games and competitions with coronation themed prizes - Break out the musical chairs, hopscotch or have a traditional game of field bowls to keep everyone entertained.
  • Creating a time capsule and holding a ceremony where it is buried - Fill a time capsule with coronation letters and drawings made by the students so this monumental occasion is never forgotten.
  • A coronation buffet or picnic - serve up a delicious array of classic British party food such as sausage rolls, finger sandwiches or some scotch eggs.
  • Craft fair - where participants can create their own crowns, flags or just their creativity shine.
  • Video calls with other schools around the Commonwealth - this can be an amazing opportunity for students to see just how much the coronation means to all those in the Commonwealth and share what fun they have been having.
  • Sponsored walks, runs or cycles - again with the thought of donating proceeds to your chosen cause, both staff and students could get involved in some sponsored sporting activities.

Award event winners and participants with coronation medals from Running Imp, a truly memorable token to treasure, and with free engraving, each medal will be especially unique.

By offering a range of activities, your coronation party is sure to have something for everyone!

What to consider when planning your School Coronation Party

As well as planning activities and entertainment for your party, there are some other important considerations to make when planning any event in a school.

You will need to decide:

  • Date and time - The coronation itself falls on a Saturday over the bank holiday weekend, so ideally your party needs to happen in the run up to this during school hours, allowing enough time for each stage of the party.
  • Ample supervision - This one is of course a no brainer, but a number of staff or parent volunteers need to be allocated to oversee the different areas of your party.
  • Location & Provisions for bad weather - What sort of British event would it be if we didn’t have the possibility of rain? This needs to be considered when planning your event, general good practice is to have both indoor and outdoor activities as well as utilising gazebos or saving enough space indoors should the heavens open and everyone needs to move inside.

What supplies will you need?

To make your School Coronation Party not only run smoothly, but be a fun and memorable day for everyone involved, we have compiled a list of the essentials:

  1. Coronation Party Decorations - Great party decorations are not just aesthetically pleasing, they also help to create a fun atmosphere and unify the different elements of your event. And any party celebrating the King’s coronation should of course have a Great British theme! We stock a range of Coronation themed decorations, including flags, bunting, hats.
  2. Plates, Napkins and Cups - Serving food and drinks is a necessity for any school party, whether it be via a coronation picnic, buffet or even a barbeque, disposable crockery is a must, as well as being in keeping with your theme it also helps to reduce overall costs and make clean up operations more efficient.
  3. Prizes, Souvenirs and Mementoes - Give your party guests something to remember the day by with a commemorative memento, after all this is a truly historic occasion! Additionally, handing out prizes for any competitions you have during your school party not only adds an extra incentive to participate but increases the overall fun element. We have everything from Coronation Mugs, Wristbands and T-Shirts as well as Coronation Badges, Coins, Medals and so much more!

Running Imp is the one stop shop for everything you need to host a School Coronation Party that will be truly memorable to everyone involved.
