The School Sports Day Checklist

08/06/2022Events

Do you remember when you were at school and you took part in a school sports day? How exciting it was to compete against your peers and win? Sports days are a great way to get the kids active whilst also having fun with their friends. So how exactly do you go about organising one? Read on for our school sports day checklist.

What should I consider before school sports day?

When planning a sports day there are a few considerations that you need to think about:

  • Where and when it’s going to take place - make sure there is plenty of room for the events, the participants and their parents. You’ll also want to make sure that your sports day doesn’t happen on the same day as another event. Research events in the local area first before setting the final date.
  • How many pupils will be competing? - make sure you don’t exceed the time specified for the day by ensuring you know exactly how many pupils will be taking part. This way, you can ensure that there is enough time for all events.
  • How many events will the pupils take part in? - similarly to above, you want to make sure that all events can occur within the time frame.
  • What supplies are you going to need? - depending on what activities you plan for the day, you may need a number of different supplies such as, cones, small bean bags, hula hoops, eggs and spoons, plus many more.
  • Who is going to be supervising? - this is a vital part of a successful sports day. Ensure that you have a number of teachers on hand to keep an eye on events and to mark down who wins!
  • Should you have first aid? - this is really important to consider, just in case someone gets hurt. Make sure there is a trained first aider on hand to look after anyone who is injured during the event.

What events could I have on a school sports day?

There are many different events you could consider for a successful sports day to get the kids and parents involved:

  • Running race - what it says on the tin! Have the pupils run a short way down the field to see who’s the fastest!
  • Egg and spoon race - this is a classic! The students run a short distance whilst balancing an egg on a spoon. If it drops, pick it up and carry on!
  • Three-legged race - two pupils tie their ankles together and walk/run a short distance together. Coordination is key!
  • The relay - running with a baton, the pupils run a distance to a cone, go around it and then run back to hand the baton to the next runner. Teamwork makes the dream work!
  • The bean bag race - starting the race with a bean bag on their head, the pupils need to run a short distance to a hoop, stand in it, bring it over their head, drop the bean bag into it and then run the rest of the way to the finish line. A tough one, but fun!
  • Netball - netball is a staple at primary school. Have a netball tournament that can be run alongside other events during the day.
  • Football - similarly to netball, football is a staple at primary school. Have a football tournament that can be run alongside other events during the day.

What should I consider on the day of the school sports day?

So now that you’ve organised the event, it’s time for the fun to begin. There are a number of ways to make sure the sports day runs smoothly and everyone has fun:

  • Drinks - make sure there is water on hand for pupils, teachers and parents alike. Staying hydrated is very important, especially on a hot summer's day.
  • First aid - like we’ve mentioned before, first aid is paramount to ensure that if anyone gets hurt, they can be tended to and looked after.
  • P.E. kit - make sure all of the pupils are dressed for the occasion. We would recommend their P.E. kit or some light, airy clothing so they can compete even when the sun is shining.
